Free ChatGPT drops its text rate limits
GPT-5.6 Luna is now the default for Free and Go users, replacing GPT-5.5 Instant, and text chats go unlimited: no more hitting a cap mid-conversation on the free plan. The rollout lands this week, just as ChatGPT crosses 1 billion weekly users.
Sol gets a reasoning-effort dial and 68% fewer errors
On Plus and Pro, GPT-5.6 Sol adds a slider to tune how hard the model thinks per query, merging instant and thinking into one model. OpenAI says factual errors are 68% less common than GPT-5.5 Instant (62% for Luna), so if Sol is your daily driver you now own the speed-versus-accuracy trade-off.
A 'Think' button, free for the first time
Free and Go users get a Think button that switches on higher reasoning for hard questions on demand: deeper reasoning without a paid plan, subject to abuse guardrails. It arrives alongside the unlimited-chat rollout this week.
The fine print: what's still metered
'Unlimited' means text only: files, images, voice and image generation keep their separate caps, and none of this touches Work or Codex. Under-18 accounts also pick up new restrictions on romantic roleplay and age-gated content.
