The first-party rate finally moves — no gateway detour needed — and undercuts Claude Opus 5, though the discount lasts only three months.

GPT-5.6 Sol drops to $4/$20 per 1M tokens from $5/$30 — a 20% cut on input and 33% on output — with cached input down to $0.40 and the long-context tier at $8/$30. It covers the API plus eligible ChatGPT Work and Codex credits; Pro, Plus and Business subscription usage is unchanged.
This time it's the list price, not a router promo
August's earlier Sol discounts lived only on OpenRouter and Vercel's Gateway while OpenAI's own API held at $5/$30. Now the first-party rate itself drops, so direct calls get the lower price with no gateway detour or BYOK routing.
It undercuts Claude Opus 5
At $4/$20, Sol now sits under Claude Opus 5's $5/$25 on both input and output, and far below Fable 5's $10/$50. For the coding and long-horizon agent work where Sol already competes, the cheaper frontier default just changed.
A three-month window, not a new floor
The rate reverts to $5/$30 on Nov 21, and OpenAI frames it as an efficiency pass rather than permanent pricing. Front-load heavy batch and eval jobs before it closes — but don't rebuild your long-term cost model around a promo.
