Update: Copilot's six-model retirement takes effect tomorrow

Last day for Gemini 3.1 Pro, two Opus and two Sonnet builds, and Raptor Mini in Copilot: from Sept 1 they're gone. Repin now; annual solo plans keep Sonnet 4.6.

  • The six models sunsetting

GitHub Copilot removes Gemini 3.1 Pro, Claude Opus 4.5 and 4.6, Claude Sonnet 4.5 and 4.6, and Raptor Mini on September 1. GitHub's suggested swaps: Gemini 3.6 Flash, Opus 4.7, 4.8 or 5, Sonnet 5, and MAI-Code-1-Flash.

  • Only annual solo plans keep Sonnet 4.6

Individual subscribers on annual Copilot plans keep Claude Sonnet 4.6 so they still have a Sonnet option; everyone else on it moves to Sonnet 5. If you depend on 4.6's exact behavior, the annual plan is the one place it survives past tomorrow.

  • Enterprise admins have to flip the replacements on

The newer models aren't enabled automatically — Copilot Enterprise admins may need to allow each alternative in their model policies. If they don't before Sept 1, a team can lose a retired model with no successor turned on.

  • What to check today

Audit anything that pins a model ID — editor settings, agent configs, CI or scripts calling the Copilot API — for Opus 4.5/4.6, Sonnet 4.5/4.6, Gemini 3.1 Pro, or Raptor Mini, and repoint it before the cutoff to avoid forced fallbacks.
