Anthropic's Model Hardware Standard: an MCP for physical devices
Standardized drivers turn weeks of hardware integration into minutes; Raspberry Pi and LeRobot are launch partners, but the preview is invite-only for now.

MCP, but for the lab bench
MHS is a shared spec that lets a Claude agent discover and operate physical instruments — microscopes, liquid handlers, robotic arms, centrifuges — through the same primitives it already uses for software. Agents drive the hardware three ways: over MCP, a command line, or code files, so it slots into stacks you already run.
Weeks of integration collapse to minutes
Standardized drivers translate between agent and device with simple read/write commands, and every device auto-generates a reference file listing its parameters and safety limits. Anthropic says wiring up an unfamiliar instrument drops from weeks or months to hours or minutes, and agents can run closed-loop experiments that retune parameters in real time.
Safety lives in the driver, not the prompt
Instead of trusting the model to stay in bounds, MHS enforces limits at the device level through the driver itself, and the auto-generated reference hands the agent hard operating limits up front. That guardrail is exactly what Anthropic wants to stress-test before release — a hallucinated command to a robot arm or spinning centrifuge is a different class of failure than a bad API call.
Raspberry Pi and LeRobot are in — hobby hardware counts
Launch partners run from Genentech and Universal Robots to Doosan, QuEra and AWS's Strands Robots, but two names matter for solo builders: Hugging Face's LeRobot and Raspberry Pi. That signals MHS isn't only for six-figure lab gear — the same spec could eventually let an agent drive a Pi-based rig on your desk once the drivers ship.
The catch: invite-only, open source later
The standard isn't open yet. It's an invite-only research preview — apply at modelhardwarestandard.com — while Anthropic collects safety evaluations with partners, and it plans to open-source the spec only after adding more safety guidelines. So today it's a signal to watch and apply for, not something you can ship on this weekend.
