The US Department of Energy and Argonne National Laboratory launched the Genesis Open Models Initiative — open-weight foundation models for materials, energy systems and biology, with the first, Genesis-Science-1, built with Arcee AI. No weights or model card are public yet, so read it as an ecosystem signal: a government-backed source of American open weights for science, aimed at the gap left since Llama wound down.
The contribution portal is open — first deadline Aug 14
Genesis is taking submissions now: foundation-stage data applications are due Aug 14, post-training work Aug 25, with first delivery Aug 28. If you have domain datasets or fine-tuning experience in a scientific field, this is a live, days-long window to shape the models before they train.
Oracle bars AI-generated code from OpenJDK
Oracle's interim policy at openjdk.org/legal/ai prohibits generative-AI contributions to the Java platform, requiring human-authored code over provenance, quality and reviewer-load concerns. If you patch OpenJDK, hand-write it — and expect more core projects to draw the same line as maintainers push back on AI 'slop.'
