OpenAI to cut Cursor off from its models Nov 12 after SpaceX buys it

OpenAI proposes to end Cursor's direct access to its models on Nov 12, 2026 — roughly 10 weeks out. If your Cursor workflow leans on GPT-5.x or Codex, plan to route around it before then.
Why: a change-of-control clause
A custom contract gave OpenAI a limited window to cancel after Cursor's owner changed. It says it "cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service," citing past contract breaches by Musk companies.
Cursor says OpenAI is only ~5% of usage
CEO Michael Truell says OpenAI models serve about 5% of Cursor's customers and the two are still talking. Anthropic's Tom Brown pledged more compute for Claude in Cursor — so most users feel little, GPT and Codex holdouts feel it hard.
What to do before Nov 12
Set your Cursor default to Claude or Gemini now rather than Auto or Router, which may still hit OpenAI; don't assume a personal BYOK key bridges the gap; and test Codex CLI or Claude Code as a fallback harness.
