OpenAI ships a native ChatGPT + Codex desktop app for Linux
The .deb/.rpm preview puts Codex and browser workflows on Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora — as Anthropic makes Sonnet 5's low price permanent.

Codex, not just chat
The preview bundles three surfaces — ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex — so Linux developers get OpenAI's coding agent running natively instead of in a browser tab. It's the first time Codex and ChatGPT Work reach Linux desktops.
Which distros, and how to install it
Official .deb and .rpm builds ship in both x64 and ARM64 for Ubuntu 24.04/26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43–44. There's no Flatpak or Snap, and Arch, openSUSE and NixOS aren't supported yet.
It imports your other agent
A built-in importer pulls projects, chats, skills, and plugins over from competing agents, with reviewable import history and opt-in auto-updates — a low-friction way to A/B it against your current setup this weekend.
The catch: it's a rough-edged preview
OpenAI is shipping this as a public preview with acknowledged rough edges, and warns supported distros and features may still change before GA. Fine as a daily-driver experiment, not for anything load-bearing.
Elsewhere: Sonnet 5 stays at $2/$10
Anthropic cancelled the September 1 increase that would have pushed Claude Sonnet 5 to $3/$15 per million tokens — the introductory $2/$10 is now the standard rate. If Sonnet 5 is in your pipeline, that's a permanent price hold worth budgeting around.
