GitHub Copilot removes Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini 3 Flash

It's live: pinned Copilot workflows now fall back silently. Same week GitHub retired its Models playground and locked npm publishing down.

  • Two Gemini models vanished from every Copilot surface

Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini 3 Flash were deprecated across all Copilot experiences on July 31. Selections pinned to them now fall back to defaults — move workflows to Gemini 3.1 Pro or Gemini 3.5 Flash to keep the behavior you tuned for.

  • The GitHub Models playground is gone

GitHub Models — the free hosted catalog for prototyping and running evals — shut down July 30. Anything quietly wired to it as a prod dependency now fails; migrate inference and evals to Azure AI Foundry or direct provider keys.

  • npm now scans every publish for malware

As of July 28, npm runs malware and dual-use metadata scanning at publish time, and Dependabot alerts on malicious packages across more ecosystems. If you ship packages, expect new checks between `npm publish` and your release going live.

  • Elsewhere: the US frontier-AI framework deadline lapsed

EO 14409's August 1 deliverables — a voluntary disclosure framework and classified benchmarking — reportedly shipped nothing, leaving labs without model-classification criteria. Watch for US frontier releases to keep slipping while open Chinese weights fill the gap.
