OpenAI cuts its models from Cursor on Nov 12 after SpaceX takeover
Only ~5% of Cursor traffic runs on GPT models—but if that's you, the API-key workarounds skip Tab and agents. Anthropic is already adding Claude compute.

The trigger: a change-of-control clause
SpaceX's $60B acquisition of Anysphere closed Aug 14, and on Aug 28 OpenAI invoked its change-of-control clause—the maximum notice it's allowed—to stop supplying Cursor on Nov 12. Future models like Astra are withheld immediately, on the grounds that OpenAI can't trust a Musk company to honor its terms.
It's ~5% of traffic—check if it's yours
GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna are the models leaving; Anthropic, Google, and Grok stay, so about 95% of Cursor usage is untouched. But if any pinned workflow, agent, or eval runs on a GPT model, it breaks in November unless you re-route it.
Your escape hatches, and their gaps
You'll still reach GPT models via a bring-your-own API key, the Codex IDE extension, or a gateway like Bedrock, Azure, or OpenRouter—all billed at API rates. None of those cover Tab autocomplete, Auto routing, or Cloud and Background Agents, so parts of your setup can't be patched over.
Anthropic's lifeline, and Cursor's talks
Within hours, Anthropic's Tom Brown said the company will increase compute to support Claude—already Cursor's most-used family—inside the editor. Cursor's Michael Truell says he's still 'speaking with OpenAI to resolve the issue,' so the Nov 12 date isn't necessarily final.
