SpaceX completed its $60 billion acquisition of Cursor-maker Anysphere on Aug 14, folding the editor into the SpaceXAI/xAI org alongside Grok Build, Grok Bot, and the Grok API. Cursor says its mission is unchanged, but your daily IDE now answers to Elon Musk.
Anthropic reportedly cut xAI off from Claude
xAI staff had reportedly been using Anthropic's models inside Cursor until Anthropic revoked the startup's access this week. Cofounder Tony Wu told staff it's 'both bad and good news' — a productivity hit that 'rly pushes us to develop our own coding product / models.'
The question that matters: do Claude and GPT stay in Cursor?
No one has confirmed whether Anthropic's Claude or OpenAI's GPT models remain selectable now that a direct rival owns Cursor. If Claude-in-Cursor is your daily driver, assume the model picker could shrink and keep a fallback editor ready.
Grok 4.6 is the flagship they'll push
SpaceXAI's Grok 4.6 — a ~1.5T-parameter model claiming GPT-5.6 Sol / Claude Fable-5-level intelligence — is the first joint release and the model Cursor will steer you toward. A 'Cursor Grok 4.6 Fast' entry briefly surfaced in the picker on Aug 11 before being pulled.
The upside: the Colossus GPU fleet
The pitch to builders is access to 'the largest fleet of GPUs in the world,' which SpaceXAI says means more powerful models that are cheaper to run. Near-term that's Grok speed and price; the trade is deeper lock-in to one lab's stack.
