Anthropic hands the Agent Skills standard to a neutral body
The SKILL.md format you already write moves to neutral governance: 70+ platforms, ~280M installs, and a versioned spec with security rules on the roadmap.

What moved: the spec, the name, the repo, the domain
Anthropic handed the Agent Skills spec, its name and logo, the GitHub org, and the agentskills.io domain to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation. The standard your skills are written in no longer belongs to one vendor.
~280M installs, 70+ platforms, now portable by charter
A single SKILL.md already works across ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code, among 70+ platforms, with roughly 1M skills published and nearly 280M installed. Neutral governance makes a per-vendor fork far less likely, so what you author stays portable.
Maintained by Anthropic, Google and OpenAI together
Lead maintainers are Anthropic's David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag, with Google and OpenAI engineers contributing as individuals. It mirrors Anthropic's MCP move, which it donated to the same foundation last December.
A versioned spec and author security rules are proposed
The proposed roadmap adds versioned releases, a formal proposal process, and security guidance for skill authors and installers, a real gap today given that skills ship runnable scripts. No dates yet; feedback is open on GitHub and Discord.
Nothing you ship today breaks
You can keep using and contributing to the standard without joining the foundation. Existing skills keep working; what changed is who steers the spec, not the format on disk.
