Report: Google to retire free Gemini Gems Oct 20 for paid Skills
A feature-flagged notice sets the deadline; Skills need a paid Pro or Ultra plan, exclude work accounts, and skip the EU and UK — with no automatic migration.

A notice hidden behind a feature flag in the Gemini web app, first spotted by TestingCatalog, tells users to save or recreate their Gems as Skills before Oct 20. Google hasn't confirmed the plan, so treat it as reportedly-coming, not final.
A free tool goes behind a paywall
Gems are free for every Gemini user today; Skills live inside Gemini Spark and require a paid Google AI Pro or Ultra plan. If it ships as written, the custom assistants you built for nothing would need a subscription to keep.
Work accounts and the EU are locked out
Skills are personal-account only — no Workspace or school accounts — and aren't available in the EEA, UK, Switzerland, or Nigeria, where Gemini Spark never launched. Builders in those regions could lose Gems with nothing to replace them.
No auto-migration, so export now
There's no automatic port; heavy users (Korea's large Gem libraries are already the loudest complaint) would rebuild each Gem by hand. If you rely on Gems, copy their instructions out this week instead of gambling on Oct 20.
