OpenAI brings Codex to a native ChatGPT desktop app for Linux
After two years web-only, Linux devs get Codex, Work, and ChatGPT in one native app — rough edges included. Plus Meta's open-weight local agent returns.

Codex, native on Linux at last
OpenAI's ChatGPT desktop app is in public preview for Linux, bundling ChatGPT, Work, and Codex in one native workspace for files, browser workflows, and agentic coding. Linux was the most-requested platform; Anthropic's Claude desktop for Linux landed about a month earlier.
Which distros, and how to install
Supported on Ubuntu 24.04/26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43/44, across x64 and ARM64, via .deb and .rpm packages downloaded from OpenAI. Downstream distros built on these should work too.
The preview's rough edges
Codex CLI projects don't show up in the app's project list, Wayland users may need manual flags to fix rendering, and there's no Flatpak or AppImage yet — so Arch and NixOS are out. Japanese and Korean IME input can also misbehave.
Elsewhere: Meta's open weights are back
Meta shipped Muse Glimmer, a 30B Apache-2.0 agent model that runs on a single consumer GPU (~20GB at 4-bit) with speculative decoding for roughly a 3x speedup on an RTX 5090. Day-one support in Transformers, Ollama, and LM Studio.
