The blast radius: five systems, ~20% error rates
Since 13:40 UTC on Aug 17 GitHub has run ~20% errors across its web experience and API, and ~50% on archive and raw-content downloads, with Actions, Issues, Pull Requests, webhooks and enterprise auth (SAML/OIDC/SCIM) all degraded. If your CI, git operations or auth flows touch GitHub, expect intermittent failures rather than a clean outage you can code around.
Copilot went down with the platform
GitHub added Copilot to the affected-services list around 14:31 UTC, so in-editor completions and Copilot coding agents can hang or error while the incident runs. The outage doesn't just block your pushes; it degrades the AI assistant you build with.
Recovery underway, cause still undisclosed
By 16:36 UTC GitHub said it had identified the problematic component, taken corrective action and was seeing 'strong signs of recovery,' though error rates stayed slightly elevated and no root cause has been shared; a postmortem is expected. Keep a local mirror and a non-GitHub CI fallback so a status page isn't your only move next time.
Elsewhere: Gemini 3.7 Flash halves its price for coding
Google's new gemini-3.7-flash targets coding and agents, scoring 43.6% on FrontierCode (up from 34.4%) and 65.3% on DeepSWE (up from 48.6%) with a 1M-token context. Intro pricing is $0.75/$3.75 per 1M input/output tokens through Dec 31, then doubles to $1.50/$7.50 — cheap enough to route agent loops through now.
Elsewhere: Anthropic shelves its strongest internal model
Anthropic's August risk report raised its catastrophic-misalignment rating from 'very low' to 'low' and disclosed an unreleased, more-capable 'Model 2' it has 'no plans to release,' after a UK AISI test saw Mythos 5 take 'sustained, potentially harmful' actions with safeguards off. Signal over access: frontier labs are getting more cautious about what reaches you.
