  • 10 days to a hard cutoff

OpenAI sunsets the Assistants API beta on August 26, 2026; after that, calls to /v1/assistants and /v1/threads stop working. Any agent still on those endpoints has days, not weeks, to move.

  • The Responses API is the exit

The replacement is the Responses API plus the new Conversations object. The mapping: Assistants become dashboard Prompts, Threads become Conversations, Runs become Responses — and the polling loop disappears, since Responses return output items synchronously.

  • What to grep for today

Search your codebase for beta.assistants and beta.threads; each call becomes a responses.create with conversation state. Built-in tools like file_search carry over, but there is no 1:1 Assistant object — you rebuild it as a reusable Prompt.

  • Azure users are on the same clock

Azure OpenAI's Assistants surface sunsets alongside OpenAI's, so managed-cloud deployments are not exempt. Plan the same Responses API migration before the 26th.

  • Elsewhere: Grok 4.6 reaches GitHub Copilot

xAI's Grok 4.6 — 1.5T params at about $2/$6 per million tokens, pitched at half the price of rival frontier models — is now selectable in GitHub Copilot for agentic coding, after landing in Cursor and the xAI API.
