The deal, officially
Stripe agreed to buy OpenRouter for over $7B on Aug 19 — roughly 6x the $1.3B valuation from OpenRouter's Series B just three months ago. Both sides expect to close 'in the coming weeks.'
Your integration doesn't change
OpenRouter says it plainly: 'Same mission, same name, same product, same roadmap.' The 400+ models, 80+ providers, pass-through pricing, and the exact API you already ship against all stay put through close.
Why Stripe actually did this
Stripe wants a meter on AI spend, not the singularity. Owning the gateway puts it in the flow of what devs pick, what it costs, and what frontier labs charge — with Ramp, Rippling, and Databricks all building AI-billing plays of their own.
The concern: neutrality
OpenRouter's whole pitch has been 'indifferent' routing. Devs are asking whether that survives when the owner also processes payments for the labs OR routes to. The public commitment: routing decisions stay 'driven by what's best for you.' Watch the incentives.
Backup gateways worth knowing
If provider-neutrality matters for you, alternatives are live: Vercel AI Gateway (GLM-5.3 and Fish Audio voice models both landed there in the last 48h), Cloudflare AI Gateway, and Portkey. Wiring in a fallback SDK today is cheap insurance against a post-close pivot.
