GitHub Copilot to retain your chat data for the life of your account
A Sept 28 merge also makes Balanced the code-review default, warns opting out strips Copilot from web and mobile, and adds upfront per-seat team billing.

Chat data now kept for your account's lifetime
GitHub is merging github.com Chat, GitHub Mobile Chat, and the Copilot cloud agent into one experience and dropping the current 28-day retention window — chat data will instead be retained for the life of your account. The change takes effect no earlier than September 28, 2026.
Code review flips to the heavier Balanced default
From September 28, Copilot code review's default effort moves from Lite to Balanced, meaning deeper, more thorough reviews out of the box. If you prefer faster, lighter passes, switch the default back to Lite before then.
Opting out strips Copilot from web and mobile
The unified policy is all-or-nothing: declining it removes Copilot Chat from github.com and GitHub Mobile. Review your Copilot settings before September 28 so you don't lose access you actually use.
Teams: pay-per-seat, upfront, starting Sept 1
Copilot Business and Enterprise seats will require payment before users get access — charged upfront each billing cycle, with overages billed separately. New signups are affected September 1, existing customers October 1; list pricing is unchanged.
Elsewhere: judge blocks Pentagon's Anthropic blacklist
U.S. District Judge Rita Lin ruled the Pentagon's supply-chain-risk designation of Anthropic unlawful on Aug 28, calling it retaliation against a government critic. The government is expected to appeal and a separate designation is still being contested, so nothing is settled yet.
