ChatGPT ads now personalize from your broader chat history
Now entrenched across 40+ countries; ads hit Free and Go, while Pro, Business, Enterprise and the API stay clean — and you can still opt out.

Free and Go get ads; Pro, Business, Enterprise and the API don't
Ads show only for logged-in Free and Go users, at the bottom of answers and clearly labeled apart from the response. Paid Pro, Business and Enterprise plans stay ad-free, and nothing changes on the API — the ChatGPT calls inside your own app never carry ads.
Targeting reaches past the current chat
Ads draw on your current conversation and, where your country and settings allow, “context from your broader ChatGPT experience” — interest-based targeting from your history, not just the thread you're in. OpenAI says advertisers never see your private conversations and that it doesn't sell your data.
Your controls, and the hard limits
You can dismiss any ad and say why, switch personalization off entirely, and clear the data used for ads at any time. OpenAI says it serves no ads to accounts it predicts are under 18, and none near sensitive topics like health, mental health, or politics — and ads don't influence the answers.
First tested in January, now a permanent revenue pillar
OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads passed a $1B annualized run rate in under 200 days and today opened its self-service Ads Manager in Europe, India, and the Middle East and North Africa. Read it as a signal: the free tier you point users to now carries ads for good, alongside subscriptions and the API.
