Anthropic retires Claude Opus 4.1; old model IDs now return errors
The old endpoint errors as of yesterday. Opus 4.8 succeeds it at a third of Opus 4's price — and 4.7+ now rejects non-default temperature and top_p.

The endpoint is dead — swap the model ID everywhere
`claude-opus-4-1-20250805` was deprecated June 5 and fully retired Aug 5; calls to it now return errors. Update the ID across source, configs, CI/CD, dashboards, and SDK params, not just your app code.
Opus 4.8 is the drop-in, at a third of the cost
There is no "Opus 5" — the recommended successor is `claude-opus-4-8` at $5/$25 per million input/output tokens, a 67% cut from Opus 4's $15/$75. Same tier, cheaper bill.
The silent trap: 4.7+ rejects your sampling params
Per migration guides, Opus 4.7 and up now error when temperature, top_p, or top_k are set to non-default values. A clean model-ID swap can still 400 if your client hard-codes temperature — strip those first.
Re-test your fallback chains before they cascade
Routing configs whose Claude fallback tiers still list retired IDs will fail over straight into a dead endpoint. Verify every tier points to an active model and run the chain end-to-end.
You may already be broken — June's retirements landed too
Opus 4 and Sonnet 4 retired June 15 (→ Opus 4.8 / Sonnet 4.6) and Mythos Preview went June 30 (→ Mythos 5). If any of those IDs are still pinned in prod, they're erroring right now.
