The frontier tier drops to $4 in, $20 out
GPT-5.6 Sol input falls from $5 to $4 per million tokens (−20%) and output from $30 to $20 (−33%), effective now through Nov 21, 2026. On a token-heavy agent loop, that is a real line-item cut on your most expensive model.
Now cheaper than Claude Opus 5
At $4/$20, Sol undercuts Claude Opus 5's $5/$25 on both input and output, and sits far below Fable 5's $10/$50. If you picked Opus 5 to save money on frontier work, the math just flipped.
Codex and ChatGPT Work inherit the rate
The cut hits the raw API and flows through to Codex coding credits and agentic ChatGPT Work; Pro, Plus, and Business subscriptions are unchanged. Vercel says its AI Gateway discounts still stack on top.
The third OpenAI cut this month
It follows an 80% drop on GPT-5.6 Luna and 20% on Terra earlier in August. The frontier price war with Anthropic and Google is accelerating — budget for inference to keep getting cheaper.
